Every day in Palestine is ‘Karbala’, Sajal Ali

Sajal Ali Pakistani actress compared the suffering in Palestine to the events of Karbala in a post on Ashura Day.

Ashura Day is observed with deep sorrow and immense respect in remembrance of Imam Hussain’s sacrifice and the incident of Karbala. Many artists shared messages on social media in honor of this significant day.

Sajal Ali updated her social media story, drawing a parallel between the atrocities in Palestine and the events of Karbala. Her post included heart-wrenching moments from Karbala and urged people, regardless of their religious background, to consider the massacre of Karbala as a lesson on the unchanging brutality of imperial violence.

The post explained that about 1,400 years ago, in what is now Iraq, a corrupt tyrant named Yazid declared himself emperor by martyring Imam Hussain, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad. Imam Hussain bravely fought against a much larger and better-equipped force.

The Karbala massacre happened on Ashura, the tenth day of Muharram. In Sunni tradition, Ashura is also remembered as the day the sea parted for Moses and the day Jesus was taken up to heaven. It is known as a day of salvation.

Sajal Ali faced criticism from some fans for sharing this story. They warned her against connecting the incident of Karbala with the Israeli actions in Palestine.
