Kadambari Jethwani accused the police officials of threatening her with dire consequences during the previous government if she did not withdraw a case she earlier filed.
The Andhra Pradesh government has suspended three senior Indian Police Service officers including a DG for allegedly arresting and harassing Mumbai-based actor-model Kadambari Jethwani without proper investigation into the complaint against her, officials said on Sunday.
The three officers, former Intelligence Chief P. Sitharama Anjaneyulu of the DG rank, former Vijayawada Police Commissioner Kranti Rana Tata of the Inspector General rank, and former Deputy Commissioner of Police Vishal Gunni, a Superintendent rank officer, were suspended after a probe into their role in the case was ordered. The case has raised public interest.
In August, Jethwani filed a complaint with NTR Police Commissioner S.V. Rajasekhar Babu charging that the police were in league with YSR Congress Party leader and film producer K.V.R. Vidyasagar, who in February this year filed a case of forgery and extortion against her. She accused top police officers of colluding with Vidyasagar and harassing her and her parents by having them arrested from Mumbai and whisked away to Vijayawada with no notice.
Jethwani, a Mumbai-based woman, said the police put her and her aged parents to humiliation coupled with illegal detention. As many as over 40 days were spent by her family in judicial custody.
Jethwani’s advocate N. Srinivas has charged that Vidyasagar had fabricated land documents with an intention to implicate Jethwani and her family, and police did not allow them to file a bail plea for several days.
A government-issued order of suspension about Anjaneyulu said that the officer started disciplinary proceedings based upon “prima facie evidence” concerning “grave misconduct and dereliction of duty.”
“The government, after careful consideration of the report and having due regard to the circumstances of the case, came to a conclusion that there is prima facie evidence and that the disciplinary proceedings are warranted for his grave misconduct and dereliction of duty…,” the GO read.
Investigations have established that Anjaneyulu had instructed the other two officers to arrest the woman much before a FIR was filed. While the FIR is dated February 2, arrest instructions were reportedly issued on January 31.
All three officers are among the 16 IPS personnel who had been issued the memo earlier, directing them to report in the office of the Director General of Police twice a day without official posting.
