Kangana Ranaut‘s film Emergency has faced controversy even before its release. According to Indian media, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and Akal Takht have called for the film to be banned, claiming that it portrays Sikhs negatively and attempts to create a biased narrative against them.
SGPC Chief Harjinder Singh Dhami stated in a press conference that Sikhs have often been misrepresented in films, hurting their sentiments. He accused the Censor Board of bias and demanded an immediate ban on the film, along with the inclusion of Sikh members on the Censor Board.
Akal Takht’s Ragbir Singh also criticized the film, saying it depicts Sikhs as “deliberate separatists” and part of a larger conspiracy, which he believes insults the Sikh community.
Kangana Ranaut announced Emergency in 2021, describing it as a political drama. After several delays, the film is now set to be released in theaters on September 6.
