Pakistan’s Animated Film ‘The Glassworker’ Makes History with Unexpected Oscar Nomination

Usman Riaz, the director of the animated film The GlassWorker which was released under the banner of Geo Films, said on the selection of the film for the Oscars: “It is a pride for me that we will be amongst the finest films of the world competing.

Usman Riaz’s The Glassworker has become the first hand-drawn animated feature film of Pakistan, which has been selected as an official entry for the country in the International Feature Film category for the Oscar Awards 2025. The film is based on an anti-war story that was completed by the director Riaz himself in 10 years.

While talking to Geo News Digital, Usman added, ‘It is an honor for me that we will be competing with the best of films in the world and presenting our art with pride’.

On the question that this film will be a ray of hope for other filmmakers for Pakistan’s shrinking cinema industry? He replied that ‘I don’t know what this means for Pakistani cinema but one thing I can say for sure is that I will try my best to do more good work and keep moving forward’.
 
Osman and his team worked diligently on getting both the story and animation component just right.

Usman further added that an Oscar nomination is a big thing, not just for me, but for the entire team at Manu Animation Studios that put their heart and soul into this project.

He further said that this selection of film for Oscars will help us to push up the graphs of stories and animation further.
