Impact of Boycott Campaign, ‘Barzakh’ Out of YouTube Pakistan

The boycott campaign against the Indian serial ‘Barzakh,’ featuring Pakistani cast and artists, has succeeded.

Barzakh

Pakistani drama fans were initially excited about ‘Barzakh.’ However, their hopes were dashed soon after its premiere. The drama ‘Barzakh’ featured scenes of homosexuality, adultery, and obscenity in the initial episodes, which sparked a boycott campaign.

The story of ‘Barzakh’ is a fantasy drama based on the philosophy that when a person dies, their soul enters a realm called Barzakh, where it resides before resurrection.

The plot includes a romantic relationship between two men and a scene where two children hear suggestive noises from a locked room, comparing them to the sounds their mother made when she was inside.

Barzakh’s Boycott Campaign

Following these controversial scenes, a nationwide boycott campaign was launched in Pakistan using hashtags like ‘No Obscenity’ and ‘No Barzakh.’ Both social media users and showbiz personalities voiced their opposition. In response to the public outcry, Zindagi issued an official statement.

Acknowledging the sentiments of Pakistanis, Zindagi announced the withdrawal of ‘Barzakh’ from YouTube Pakistan starting August 9, 2024. In their statement, they thanked the global audience for their unwavering support and explained that the decision was made to respect the feelings of the Pakistani viewers.

Representatives from Zee Five and Zindagi expressed their gratitude to the global audience for supporting ‘Barzakh,’ emphasizing that the show was created to unite people. However, considering the current public sentiment in Pakistan, they decided to autonomously withdraw ‘Barzakh’ from YouTube Pakistan to respect their viewers.
