Diljit Dosanjh’s Film ‘Punjab 95’ Faces 120 Cuts from Censor Board

Diljit Dosanjh‘s upcoming film, Punjab 95, based on the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, is facing several censorship challenges from the Indian Censor Board (CBFC).

As reported by Mid-Day, the board initially asked for 85 scenes to be removed, but after further review, the number increased to 120 cuts. One of the most controversial requests is to change the name of the protagonist from Jaswant Singh Khalra to “Sutlej,” a reference to a river in Punjab. The film’s producers have strongly opposed this, as Khalra is a respected figure in the Sikh community, and changing his name is seen as disrespectful to his legacy.

The censor board has also suggested renaming the film Punjab ’95, referring to the year when Khalra disappeared. Additionally, they requested the removal of a scene featuring Gurbani, the Sikh holy scriptures, and all mentions of Punjab, Tarn Taran district, Canada, and Great Britain.

The producers argue that these demands are unnecessary and unfair, as the film is based on true events and testimonies. Altering it would compromise its authenticity.

The film is directed by Honey Trehan and produced by Ronnie Screwvala, with Arjun Rampal and Surendra Vicky playing key roles.
