Former actress and UN human rights activist Celina Jaitly has added her voice to the criticism of the recent Kolkata rape case. This shocking event has sparked widespread outrage, with many celebrities calling for tougher measures to combat crimes against women.
Celina Jaitly, known for her advocacy for various causes including the LGBTQA+ community, has shared her own experiences with victim-blaming.
In a revealing social media post, the No Entry actress discussed her teenage years and the harassment she faced. She recounted how, as a young girl, she was constantly catcalled by university students who followed her school rickshaw and threw stones to get her attention.
Despite the harassment, Jaitly was blamed for her own victimization. A teacher told her it was because she was “too westernized,” not dressing conservatively or tying her hair in braids.
Celina Jaitly also shared a distressing incident from 11th grade, when boys cut the brake wires on her scooty as part of their harassment. Her teacher suggested that her “forward” appearance—riding a scooty and wearing jeans—was to blame for the harassment. Jaitly, who suffered physically and emotionally, was made to feel responsible for the violence she endured.

She recounted, “In 11th grade, I remember they cut the wire of my scooty’s brakes because I didn’t acknowledge the university boys who were heckling me and leaving lewd notes on my scooty. My male classmates, worried for my safety, told our teachers. My class teacher told me, ‘You come across as a forward girl, riding a scooty and wearing jeans with your hair open. That’s why boys think you’re of loose character.’ I was always blamed. I remember jumping off my scooty to save myself when the brakes failed. I was hurt badly, and yet it was my fault. My scooty was damaged, and I was both physically and psychologically hurt. I was told it was MY FAULT!”
Jaitly also highlighted the impact on her family, noting that her grandfather, a retired Colonel who had served in two wars, was ridiculed by the same boys who targeted her. This added humiliation emphasized the need for systemic change, as Jaitly pointed out the shame and anger her grandfather felt.
